The assassination attempt on Donald Trump provided him with yet another opportunity to present himself as protected by God and as the saviour of American democracy.
What a travesty!
Listening to Donald Trump’s rambling harangues (one can hardly call them speeches), full of lies, hatred, his abuse of any opposition and his self-agrandisement, it is hard to understand his having much support, save from those who will follow anyone who they think can give them what they want, without caring about who gives it to them.
It was, then, with relief that I heard that Joe Biden had bitten the bullet and made way for Kamala Harris. Twenty years younger with a strong track record and both female and black, she is a breath of fresh air. I believe she can give Donald Trump the hiding he deserves and give the United States of America the leadership they need.
Here is a poem that ultimately celebrates her arrival on the scene:
Crisis
America is teetering, the situation’s sad,
For Donald Trump is vicious, more than a little mad.
The rednecks go on rioting, the woodsmen have their guns.
Conspiracy possesses them, who knows how long it runs.
For truth is hard to validate, as jesting Pilate said,
Fomenting lies is easy and they’re hard to put to bed.
And reconciliation will be harder to achieve
As extremists work more cleverly in efforts to deceive.
We’re at a crucial turning point; to either left or right.
We hope that the electorate will get decisions right.
Democracy is ailing and it’s needing life support.
It’s important to keep going, but the future’s looking fraught.
Our history has shown us that persistence can pay off,
So, we must pull together, though the going might get rough.
Respect is what is needed for each other’s point of view,
Though that is what extremists are unwilling yet to do.
Now compromise and listening are what we need the most
And we hope Kamala Harris will command the larger host,
Thus, defeating the extremists and retaining common cause,
Restore our hopes for lasting peace and earn worldwide applause.
